Halo Championship Series Salt Lake City Global Invitational 2023

Goal

In collaboration with Spacestation Gaming, we stepped into uncharted territory, our first-ever esports event. The goal? Bring the Halo Championship Series Salt Lake City Global Invitational 2023 to life in a way that felt exciting, immersive, and unforgettable.

We split the experience into two distinct worlds: a free, open-to-the-public activation space where anyone—ticketed or not—could appreciate the activations and artwork, and a gritty, intimate mainstage experience hosted in a concert hall that gave the whole event an edge you just don’t get in traditional esports venues.

I led the charge on the creative direction, building the entire theme around a blacklight graffiti concept. We wanted it to feel purposefully scrappy, grungy, and underground. Every visual element was designed to wow, from wheatpaste-style posters to layered neon details that popped under UV light. Nothing was generic, every inch had intention.

The result? An overwhelmingly successful debut that exceeded every expectation. Fans, players, and first-timers alike praised it for its personality, its creativity, and the fresh energy it brought to the Halo competitive scene. For our first foray into esports, we didn’t just show up—we set a new bar and secured an even bigger event for the following year.

Event Analytics

  • 4000+ attendees (main event and free area)

  • 6,000,000+ impressions

  • 1,300,000 views on Twitch

  • 91,500 peak concurrent viewers

My Role

  • I collaborated closely with Creative Director Devin Wakefield, Lead Designer Brenda Hawley, Senior Graphic Designer Trent Miller, Graphic Designer Spencer Stirling, and Web Designer Chase Murphy to develop moodboards, style sheets, event activations, merchandise concepts, and overall event collateral. Throughout the process, I played a key role in shaping the visual identity and creative execution of the event.

  • I led the design of the official event logo, setting the tone for the entire visual identity of the HCS Salt Lake City Major.

  • I concepted and designed the "History of Halo" wall installation (pictured below), a large-format timeline that celebrated the evolution of the franchise and gave fans a moment to reflect on the series’ legacy.

  • To bring cohesion across the event space, I developed a custom pattern that was used across key event collateral, including lanyards, badges, mainstage desk wraps, and archway coverings. This pattern became a core visual element that helped tie the blacklight graffiti-inspired theme together.

  • In collaboration with my creative team, I assisted in the graffitiing of Halo 3D models that we turned into standable cutouts for photo-opportunities.

  • I also designed a series of Halo-themed wheatpaste posters, printed on fluorescent neon paper. I was hands-on in their installation, using torn edges and layered placement to give them an authentic, street-inspired texture that added depth to the environment.

  • I prepared detailed tech packs for manufacturers, including specs, layout guides, and color callouts to ensure precision and quality during production.

  • Beyond design, I also assisted with event space planning and on-site setup, helping bring the creative vision to life from concept to execution.

  • I designed the branding and visual identity for the Banished Ink Temporary Tattoo Parlor, and also worked on-site to bring that activation to life for attendees.

  • I created several pieces of Halo-inspired merchandise for Spacestation Gaming, blending lore elements with streetwear appeal to resonate with fans and players alike.

  • To support the event's cyberpunk aesthetic, I designed custom neon signs based on Halo lore, which were projection mapped throughout the venue to create an immersive, story-driven environment.

  • I created a series of lore-inspired foam-core posters that were placed throughout the venue, reinforcing the event theme and deepening the fan experience.
